2 Disturbing Trends in Software Development in 2021

In our latest post we focused on 3 most positive things in software development 2021. However, the year 2021 wasn’t all nice and easy. The following observations are on 2 disturbing trends in this niche within the IT industry.

#1 Alarming Cybersecurity Stats

Even with considerable investments in security processes and technology, depressing statistics reveal there is a high number of vulnerabilities in networks exploited by hackers to extend their attack strategies.

Moreover, with the growing adoption of the web- and cloud-based apps and IoT devices storing so much essential data, cyberattacks have become more frequent and much more dangerous.
We see the ‘bad guys’ are cunning and constantly augmenting their methods.

Damage from double-extortion ransomware has risen 935% since 2020, estimates Group-IB, while Cybersecurity Ventures predicts the cost of ransomware incidents worldwide to reach $265 billion by 2031.

#2 The Lack Of Innovation

These days we constantly see the arrival of new technologies and tools. However, just think, can all these products get rated as “innovative”? In most cases, we deal SIMPLY with updated versions, but they are not game-changers.

We think the most likely reasons for the current innovation deficit can be the reluctance of businesses to invest during the uncertain times (we don’t blame them), as well as remote work communication challenges. Lucky are those companies who like German Standard were initially founded with a remote-first mindset. Those have had their chance to become market leaders while their competitors were trying to fix their workflows to meet the demands of the remote-friendly times.

Those were two alarming trends from 2021. Yet we’re 100% confident brighter days for the software development ecosystem are on the horizon. Let’s warmly welcome the year 2022 and hope for the best!
